PECO energy serves approximately 1.6 million total electricity customers in southeast Pennsylvania including the city of Philadelphia. Roughly 1.4 million of these electricity users are residential customers, with the rest being commercial and industrial.
Prior to the Pennsylvania electricity choice act PECO energy handled all aspects of the electricity business for customers including generation, transmission, distribution, billing, and customer service. Now that the Pennsylvania electricity market has been deregulated, customers have a choice of who they buy their electric generation supply from. PECO continues to handle the delivery of the power to their customers (transmission and distribution) as well as the maintenance of the power lines and billing.
PECO also provides default generation rates for those customers who have not shopped the competitive market for low electricity rates. However, PECO does not see any profit from these default generation rates and instead just passes on the revenues for these charges to competitive electricity companies who won previously held auctions for the right to service default customers.
